Mutually Assured Dysfunction (demo)
A square acrylic painting of the following scene: Behind a rusty chain link and barbed wire fence are rusty canisters buried in the sand--7 visible, but there could be many more out of frame. Some of the canisters (1 in frame) are mostly covered with chipped blue paint, and the rest with chipped pink paint. The blue and pink canisters are separated by another fence, perpendicular to the first. The external fence the viewer is looking through has two nuclear waste warnings, one on either side of the internal separator fence. They're both yellow, with a black border and a black radioactive symbol. The sign on the left, in front of the blue canisters, used to be a triangle, but a couple of it's corners have rounded a bit over the years. The sign on the right, in front of the pink canisters, used to be a circle but has broken off pieces that left a couple of straight edges.

Notes

  • Most of this song was written before I arrived at the album thesis. Before I grew past blaming my mom for everything that went wrong, before I realized that there's no right way to raise kids under capitalism. I don't blame her anymore, and it feels unfair to ever have blamed her for a situation that obviously had many factors.
  • With all that said, I do feel the need to commemorate my sister on this album. I've already started writing a different song about her, and either I Will Survive You will come early in the album to signal growth, or it will be replaced entirely.
  • Also, I messed up one of the lyrics but didn't think it was worth rerecording. The correct lyrics are listed below.

Lyrics

Everybody blamed her husband 'cause he put her through hell
But can one man destroy a foundation that was built well?
She was so strong,
After everything I'm sure that he was just the last straw
I loved her like a mother 'cause you didn't have the time
But she was just a teen and she deserved to be a child
Now that she's gone
I can't help but wonder, was I part of the cause?

I felt so bad watching you bury your daughter
I won't put you through that again
But more than that, I won't be next to the slaughter
You don't get to be there when my life ends

I will survive you
I will survive you
She didn't get to
So now it's what I have to do

Everybody at the funeral had their stories to tell
But why were they all about the way she loved to help?
And I'm so ashamed
That I don't remember that much else to say
But she mocked superstition and she loved Halloween
She documented moments that you didn't seem to see
When you took us out of state
I can't believe how you couldn't conceive of her pain

I felt so bad watching you bury your daughter
I won't put you through that again
But more than that, I won't be next to the slaughter
You don't get to be there when my life ends

I will survive you
I will survive you
She didn't get to
So now it's what I have to do

You don't get to speak at my funeral!
You don't get to weep at my grave
You don't get to live to forgive yourself
Without apologies in the way

'Cause I will survive you
I will survive you
She didn't get to
So now it's what I have to do

I will survive you
Like she deserved to
Missy was gone too soon
Wish she was here instead of you
